Hi Everyone!

I know I have taken a very long blog hiatus, I needed some settling in time here in Chicago. I hit a bit of a rough patch but am back on my feet and absolutely loving it here. I’ve been fortunate enough to make some wonderful and supportive friends, am settled into my new job, and have been enjoying exploring my new city now that our pool is closed. Because it was hard to drag me away from there when it was open!

I will do a post to share my new studio apartment, but in the meantime here is a sneak peek. And Coco was sure to make a cameo!  : )

We’ve had a truly beautiful and warm October so far, but I’ve been getting myself prepared for the coming colder months and have found some great deals! In addition to some shopping, I also decided to give Rent the Runway Unlimited a try and am really enjoying it. They have expanded their options as well which is really exciting. You can pay $159/month for 4 items (used to be 3) that you can exchange as much as you’d like, or you can pay $89/month for 4 items that you keep all month and then send back. Pretty cool! Use my link if you want to give it a try, you can cancel anytime.

I’ve been renting a lot of cute tops as they work with my lifestyle well, but also rented this beautiful royal blue dress for a gala I went to a few months ago. So great to not have to buy anything for it!

Now onto the shopping…

Blondo’s are my favorite winter boots, stylish, relatively affordable, and most importantly waterproof! Perfect for wet and/or snowy climates. I know these will be a staple this winter, I picked them up in the gorgeous taupe as well as the black.

Blondo Tiana Waterproof Bootie

In Chicago I try to walk to and from work weather permitting, and I really hate wearing flats. So I’ve been finding heels that work for my 20 minute or so walk each way, but still look cute for day at the office. Found these great low block heels with a pointy toe.

Sole Society

My new life in Chicago requires more casual and going out clothes that it did in New York. In New York it was very unusual to change between work and the evening activity I had planned, it was just too hard to get around. I had a ton of dresses that I would choose from based on what I had planned. In Chicago however, I can generally head home after work with time to change and freshen up before I head out. It is nice! And fortunately I have plenty of closet space here : )

I have 2 new pair of jeans that are pretty much all I wear anymore. I’ve always been an American Eagle jeans fan, but I finally tried their hi-waist jeans and I’m a convert. They are just high enough, keep their shape, and suck you in. So comfy too. I’m a 4 regular in these.

Denim X Hi-Rise Jegging

Super Soft Denim X4 Hi-Rise Jegging

Found this super soft and affordable sweater that will be great with leather leggings

BP Gray Sweater

I am one of those people who orders a ton of stuff and then returns a lot of it. I’ve done a lot of shopping at Nordstrom and Banana Republic, but I must say, so far Old Navy has really been pulling through for me this season.

I usually hate wearing pants to work because I sit all day long and I find them uncomfortable. But I have lots of cute sweaters and tops that aren’t getting much use these days. Well, not anymore because I found the perfect work pant! I’ve always loved the pixie pant, but would find them uncomfortable after 8 hours and found myself mostly reaching for my black ponte pants from American Eagle. Unfortunately they don’t come in other colors there, so a bit limiting. But Old Navy has made their pixie pant out of ponte fabric in 4 lovely shades, and I’m so excited! Wearing these in the navy as I type this. Seriously so comfortable, a stretchy waistband, and they suck you in! Yay for the sculpt factor. I took a size 4 regular in these. Get them while you can!

Mid-Rise Ponte Knit Pixie Pants

Fell completely in love with these bell sleeve tees – perfect for work and weekend. The material is nice and thick, no need for a cami, and the fit is great. I took a medium and bought in 3 colors!

Semi-Fitted Bell Sleeve Top

Easy dresses that I can wear with bare legs as well as tights are on my must have list. And polka dots! How could I resist. I actually bought this dress in all the patterns and solids, but only the navy and the polka dot fit. I found the sizing to be a little inconsistent, heads up. And it is on the shorter side, if you are over 5’5 I would suggest a tall. I might have needed a tall in some of the other colors that didn’t fit, the hips just sat too high. I took a medium in this.

Ponte Knit Ruffle Sleeve shift dress

I know the chilly days are on the way so I stocked up on a few of these sweater tunics, love the length! Took a medium

Textured Turtleneck Tunic

This ruffle hem sweater is SO cute. I got it in 2 colors. Took a medium but I likely could have done a small. I’m ok with the slouchier fit though. If you aren’t busty or between sizes, would size down.

Ruffle-hem Sweater

If you’re looking for a great layering piece check out this open front cardigan. I’m wearing it today in the light grey over a cream blouse with my navy ponte pants. I took a small in this based on reviews and was happy I did.

What are your favorite finds for the fall/winter season? Happy Shopping!

Hi Everyone!

As summer winds down and we look ahead to fall and winter I figured this was the perfect time to give what seems to be a quarterly life update, as well as some suggestions for things to buy now that will transition your wardrobe into the coming cooler seasons.

Ahhhh life. Well my divorce was finalized in May, and while it didn’t really change a whole lot, it did make it so we could wrap up some loose ends and provided a little closure I suppose. It is bittersweet. I know it is for the best in the long run, but still has some sadness attached. My cousin said it will probably always be a little sad and I think that’s true.

 :

I mentioned back in April a relationship I was hopeful about, but we ended things in June – maybe I had a feeling that was going to happen and why I was so cautious about putting it out there. It is what it is. I was upset and it was hurtful, but I deserve to feel like I am a priority in someone’s life and I like to think I learned a thing or two about not trying to make a relationship work with someone who can’t or isn’t investing as much. And actions speak louder than words.

Just because something ends doesn't mean it never should've been. Remember, you lived, you learned, you grew and you moved on.:

So I’ve been working really hard on keeping busy doing stuff that makes me happy. I’m very extroverted and being alone is hard for me. I get bored and restless easily on my own and that’s something I’m trying to work on. Truthfully other than the first year I moved to Seattle after college (in which I was very depressed), this is the first time I’ve ever lived by myself. Kinda crazy to think about!

Not that I’m sitting at home much though! I spent some fun weekends over the summer in Montauk, it was nice to get away to the beach. I turned 34 July 2nd and some of my besties took me to a Mets game with fireworks to celebrate. There was a beautiful weekend in Chicago with 2 friends exploring the city, and then I just got back from one of my good friend’s birthday weekend in a lake house by the Hudson Valley – 11 awesome ladies, lots of wine, games, and even some horseback riding!

And things aren’t slowing down either – this weekend I’m headed with my dinner/wine club ladies to Sag Harbor and we have a fun day of wine tasting planned. Then my sorority big sis who we call “Bunzie” is coming for a visit the following weekend. Might even be getting away for a last weekend trip somewhere the weekend of the 8th, and then I’m off to Ireland and Scotland for 10 days with my XO alumnae little sis, Dana! So many adventures and I’m just trying to appreciate and enjoy all of it. The holidays will be here before we know it, and we all know how those seem to fly by.

Don't cry over the past, it's gone. Don't stress about the future, it hasn't arrived. Live in the present and make it beautiful.:

Status: Building an empire, finding myself, healing myself, loving myself, being passionate, getting fit, growing friendships, meeting new people & making memories. I should add finding a smart, funny, attractive, honest and romantic woman. And a unicorn while I'm at it.:

So that bring us to the important things – what in the world to wear for all of this? haha

Fall in NYC is my favorite season here – people are back in the city instead of trying to escape it, the weather isn’t too hot, but not freezing yet, and there is just a wonderful energy about it all. When I’m shopping now I’m thinking what can I wear in the next month or two, but also when the temps drop and we are bundling up to survive. Unless we have another winter like last year when it is 70 degrees Christmas Day!

My first tip is dresses – I love dresses. Ones that have black in them, or go well with black, that are short or 3/4 length sleeved. These are perfect for end of summer and fall, but then transition easily by adding some black tights, boots, and you can often even layer the dress over a turtleneck or button down, or add a faux fur vest. Dress them up or down with footwear and accessory choices. (I find dresses with some kind of sleeve are better because you don’t feel like they need a layer as much as you do for sleeveless. They just look better with boots and stuff on their own.)

Here are some current faves:

Dress – Maggy London (Less than $50!) (I’m wearing a 6)

Shoes – Ann Taylor  (obsessed!)

14359235_1459531014074081_6948036820564122194_n

I’m a big fan of black and white stripes although this dress comes in just black and other prints too. Wear this with bare legs and a peep toe bootie now, later with black tights and a white faux fur vest. Old Navy is having 40% off with the code COZY until September 21st so get this for a bargain!

Dress – Old Navy (I have the animal print in a medium)

I’m a huge fan of Old Navy’s t-shirt dresses as well, but I recommend going up one or two sizes from normal, I’m wearing a large here. Also love the colors in this scarf and the necklace is from my Rocksbox this month. Can wear with flat sandals for casual, pumps for work, and throw on tights, booties and a vest when the temps drop.

Scarf – Ann Taylor

Necklace – Kendra Scott

Next up, you need a great pair of black skinny pants – these will help transition some of your more summery tops to the cooler temps now and then you can layer on the sweaters and boots when the time comes. Highly recommend these – they suck you in but have the perfect amount of stretch, a mid-rise, comfy, and affordable! Unfortunately this adorable top is sold out.

Pants – American Eagle

14291822_1453051478055368_4352416512441747320_n

I love my Old Navy ankle pixie pants and all of the fun colors they come in. Really loving this berry hue that is perfect for cooler temps.

Pants – Old Navy (I wear a 4 typically)

cn11852717

Hmm, what to wear with those pants. I’m partial to a great tunic blouse. You can wear them with skinny jeans and a pump or open toed bootie now, and later add tall boots and a faux fur vest, or pair with your  leather leggings for a night on the town like this look. And these Hue leggings are definitely a must have! Wearing a small in these.

12196255_1216943278332857_1342600541232018538_n

Here are some great tunics I recommend

Tunic – Lush (Less than $30 and comes in all kinds of colors! Wearing a small)

img_3869

Tunic – Loft (This year’s version of the red one I’m wearing above, highly recommend)

imageservice-1

Sleeveless Tunic – Loft (Sleeveless are great for warmer climates and easy to layer a cardigan or blazer over)

Now you need some shoes that we’ve talked about obviously. I used to think open-toe bootie was an oxymoron, but I swear they are the perfect transition shoe! I love these from Sole Society, the lace on the side is so cute! This is also a great neutral color to go with everything.

Bootie – Sole Society freja_dark_taupe_0771

Last but not least, I think a suede pump, especially in a red or berry shade is another item that you will get lots of use out of in the fall and winter. My red pumps get use now with navy dresses, or jeans and white blouses, and then I put them on over black tights in the winter for a much needed pop of color without bare foot exposure.

Hi everyone! Hope you’ve been following me on Facebook and Instagram where I’ve been posting a lot, but decided I was due for a real blog post too. December was a rough month for me as you might remember, but life moves on, the holidays end,  and I’m having a lot more good days than bad at this point. I’ve been spending lots of time with friends but also working on being happy with my own company (with Coco by my side of course). I’ve also been really enjoying a kickboxing class I do on the weekend and have been walking to work with a co-worker weather permitting – exercise is good! It is really a day by day process to rebuilding a life that looked different for a long time. There are a few quotes that I’ve found particularly helpful to go back to when I’m feeling low.

This first one is from a divorce blog I’ve found very helpful, Round and Round Rosie. As hard as divorce is, it really forces you to spend time with yourself, to learn from your mistakes, and makes you stronger. As my wise cousin Tami says, it is humbling and gives you a lot more perspective and empathy. These are all good things.

This is another one that I think is really beautiful that brings me some peace. We love, and hurt, and learn to forgive ourselves. It is part of being human.

Funny enough, just a few weeks after I wrote that life update in December, I met a great guy I’ve been dating ever since. We met on Bumble and he flew here to meet me the day before Christmas Eve. Hard part is he lives in Chicago, and the fact that he travels for work and has 2 young kids makes seeing each other a bit challenging. But in some ways that is good because it means I still spend plenty of time with myself, which is where I need to be right now I think. I haven’t put it out there publicly because it is scary. It is new, and let’s be honest, could leave me with a broken heart. But you can’t have love without risk. We’ll give it a few more months and then I will hopefully get to share more details with you all : )

In happy news, I spent a fantastic weekend with my girlfriend’s Randi, Kelli, and Vivian in Ft. Myer’s this past weekend. I’m a Cali girl and I love the sunshine and warm weather. And getting out of town with great friends is always a good idea. I love this new bikini I picked up from Victoria’s Secret, comes in sizes A-DDD and is so comfy!

My cousin Tami, as mentioned above, is coming into town Thursday through Monday and I’m soooo excited, and then 3 weeks later I head to Austin for my annual sorority sister reunion trip! I really am lucky to have a life filled with love and support to help get through the ups and downs.

And speaking of love, well you all know my love for shoes!!!! Here are some of my favs out now:

These Pia Sandals from Sole Society are the perfect summer evening shoe. I got them in gold and I can already tell I’m going to wear them to the ground. But be warned, they run quite small. I’m sometimes an 8, usually an 8.5, but ended up needing a 9 in these. I was so happy I exchanged for the 9 because they are perfect now!

pia_crackled_gold_4134

I also adore these Sole Society black and white striped pumps, they are great to add some summer flair to your basic black pieces. I took an 8.5 in these. rima_black_white_stripe_3337

Loft is killing it with their shoe game this year – see all shoes here.

I picked up this pair of gold wedges and I’m in heaven. The perfect heel height, comfy, sexy, and goes with just about everything. LOVE. I got an 8 in these and they fit great, probably an 8.5 would have worked too.

And these flats are seriously the cutest, I want them in every color!!! Took these in an 8. At this price they can’t be beat!

Clearly I’m having a thing for gold sandals this year.

Thanks so much for stopping by, happy shopping!!!

The biggest challenge with this new job will be finding time to take photos! There will be iPhone and mirror pics for awhile here until I get a new camera and settle into a routine, sorry about that. Our wonderful receptionist Carly snapped this for me quickly! I’m wearing a dress that has been hiding in my closet for a few years now, it is perfect for the transition from summer to fall. I plan on wearing it in the winter with black tights layered over a black turtleneck perhaps, and I love a houndstooth print. This dress was found at a boutique in Austin, but I found a few similar ones on Amazon for you!

Happy Friday!

I’ve been a little slow on the posting here but be sure to follow me on Instagram @denimanddotsnyc and Facebook – I post there a lot more regularly! I include a lot of recipe recommendations too.

Last Friday we went to see our final New York Pops at Carnegie Hall show for the season – a tribute to Frank Sinatra. It was fabulous! I decided it was the perfect occasion to glam it up and pulled out this two-piece dress I picked up at Piperlime on clearance. I’m so sad they are closing!! I love the combo of leather and lace mixed in this dress.

The great thing about a two-piece dress (a bit of an oxymoron, I know) is that it wears as a dress with the pieces together but you can mix those pieces into other outfits too – win, win!

This outfit is no longer available but I found you a fab Vince Camuto two piece dress that is very similar, and it’s on sale! Top here, Skirt here.

And I’m so glad I added my favorite red mid-heel pumps for a pop of color, along with a red lip. Sole Society has made this style even better with some gorgeous scalloped detailing – I’m dying to get these in hot pink now!

We got a new camera that my husband is enjoying playing with, so hoping I can provide better pictures at least most of the time now!

My love of Sole Society is no secret! And I’m totally obsessing over some of the new spring/summer shoes they have out. Such fun colors and neutrals, all along with manageable heel heights and reasonable prices – can it get any better! They’ve been selling out a lot lately and not restocking, so don’t wait if there is something you really want. I’m still sad about a striped d’orsay pump I didn’t get my hands on in time… But in good news we are finally getting a glimpse of spring weather here in NYC!

Happy Hump Day! Where has the week gone?

Last night I wore this to book club, this month our book was MWF seeks BFF – I totally related to it and thought it was pretty good. It is about one woman’s search to find a new BFF after moving to Chicago with her husband.

I was feeling inspired to mix things up last night and decided to try some new layering. I ended up really loving this outfit! I’m not big on button up shirts usually, but really liked this one with a sparkly collar layered under this dress. My red booties added a splash of color.

Hope everyone is having a great week, thanks for stopping by!

Well I’m back after a nice, long blogging break. We had a great Christmas with Michael’s family, and then headed to Jamaica to ring in the New Year, and enjoy some warm weather. It was my first time there but definitely not my last. We stayed at the Sandals Royal Caribbean in Montego Bay and it was absolutely fabulous.

Here are some pics from the end of December…

I wore this winter white outfit to the holiday Pops show at Carnegie Hall. Labor Day is no reason to stop wearing white pants! To see more fun winter white looks pop over to Rich Life on a Budget’s “How I Wear My: Winter White” post.

I’ve been slacking on the outfit pictures lately but I wore this a few weeks back, on an unusually warm night, to have dinner with our friends that were in town from Seattle. We went to this adorable place called Rosemary’s in the West Village that is one of my favorite spots.

A blazer was all the layering I needed so I paired this navy blazer with gold buttons over an orange blouse – one of my favorite color combos!

Ahh, life has been so crazy lately! On top of moving, then having family in town, I had to spend last week in Phoenix for work. Now ready to finally enjoy being settled in our new place! I’ve got the Christmas decor up and I’m ready for all the fun holiday events!

Saturday night we headed to the New York Botanical Gardens with our friends’ Liz and Jim for the holiday train show they have there. It was so cool! And fortunately indoors as it was raining buckets. I didn’t make the smartest shoe choice for the evening…. wellies would have been more appropriate.

Still had a great time though, and I was cozy in my new Lou & Grey sweater for the evening. I jazzed it up with my favorite leather leggings and my plaid purse and red booties added a festive touch.

Thanks for stopping by!
